Ever notice that the attention of our world is often on “Petty Things”. We so often argue about non-essentials and often fail to see what’s really of value. Nothing clears up our focus on petty things like a reality check:
– In recent weeks you could complain about the poor air quality here in California…until you stop to realize that people’s homes are burning in the fires and families are losing everything.
– Often people complain about some physical ailment they endure….only to learn that a healthy young man was killed by a drunk driver last week just two months before his wedding day. (God bless his family & fiancé)
– We can get frustrated with our kids and complain about them to others….only to be snapped out of it by an urgent prayer request for an infant baby that needs life-saving heart surgery.
Important things have a way of making petty things be seen for what they are….lesser things.
The Apostle Paul puts it like this when talking about how important love is….
“When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” – I Corinthians 13:11-13
Love seems to be what my focus needs to be on.
The Apostle Paul also said…
“If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.”
– I Corinthians 13:1-2
Jesus states that the greatest command is…. “Love the Lord God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.”– Matt. 22:36-39
I love the way Paul clears up our focus on “lesser things” in Galatians 5:6 – “For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.”
The most critical thing I can be involved in is “faith expressing itself through love”. That’s what really matters! That should be an earmark of my life. Petty things….lesser things, can be so distracting. Keep focused on Loving God and others.
